UNLV Hosts Screening of "Nurse Unseen," Honoring the Heroic Contributions of Fil-Am Nurses

Las Vegas, NV - Tonight, the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) hosted a special screening of the documentary "Nurse Unseen," directed by Emmy award-winning filmmaker Michele Josue. The film chronicles the Filipino nurse migration to the U.S. and the harrowing conditions they faced during the COVID-19 pandemic. The documentary highlights the resilience and passion of Filipino nurses who accounted for a staggering 31.5% of nurse deaths from COVID-19.

The documentary presented experiences of Filipino nurses who served on the frontlines, often in understaffed and high-risk environments. It also explores the disproportionate impact of the pandemic on Filipino nurses, rooted in their innate caring culture. The film underscores the emotional and physical toll the pandemic took on these healthcare heroes, many of whom continued to work despite the risks to their own health and safety.

By reliving these experiences, "Nurse Unseen" offers a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by Filipino nurses and the lessons that can be learned about resilience, dedication, and the need for better support systems for healthcare workers in times of crisis.

The documentary also provides today’s post-pandemic community a chance to say thank you to those who sacrificed so much to care for all during the pandemic.

By hosting this screening, the UNLV School of Nursing, through its newly installed Filipino-American Dean, Dr. Sigrid Ladores Barrett, connects directly with the community, demonstrating a genuine commitment to community engagement. This initiative underscores the UNLV School of Nursing's role as a leader in fostering strong community connections on behalf of all nursing schools. It showcases the school's relevance, current engagement, and relatability to the diverse community it serves.

Don't miss this powerful documentary and the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by Filipino nurses during one of the most trying times in recent history.
