LAS VEGAS — The Philippine Nurses Association of Nevada (PNANV) officially named its 2026 scholarship recipients during a high-energy "Un-Gala" at the Orleans Hotel and Casino on May 9, reinforcing a 34-year commitment to growing the nursing pipeline in the Silver State.
The scholarship presentation served as the cornerstone of the event held at the French Quarter Ballroom. PNANV leadership emphasized that the program is a strategic investment in the community's health, offering financial support to students pursuing both Registered Nurse (RN) and Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) pathways.
This year’s honorees were recognized for their academic excellence and their commitment to community advocacy. The 2026 scholars include: Jacqueline Martinez – Carrington College Reno (ADN Program), Althea Deanise Gregorio – University of Nevada, Las Vegas (BSN Program), Saira Lyn Balabagan Vergara – Nevada State University (BSN Program), Mary Anusha Braveen – Grand Canyon University (BSN Program).
The scholarship’s mission is to promote excellence in nursing practice and leadership by supporting the next generation," said PNANV President Emer Sambo, who highlighted the organization’s 34-year history of service.
Healthcare Leaders Unite
The event featured a powerful keynote address by Dr. Chowdhury Ahsan, who fortified the statistics showcasing the immense impact of nursing on the local community. His address underscored the critical role nurses play in patient outcomes and the overall stability of the healthcare system.
Governor Joe Lombardo also delivered a special message, praising the Filipino nursing community as a "force" in the state’s healthcare landscape. He noted that Filipino-Americans now account for one in every six nurses in Nevada. The Governor also drew a parallel to the dedication of educators, recognizing the overlap with Teacher Appreciation Week.
The organization’s mission received a significant boost from a new community partner. The Nevada Cardiovascular Education and Research Foundation, represented by Dr. Tony Alamo and Dr. Sanjay Malhotra, ceremoniously presented a check during the event, signaling a new collaboration aimed at supporting PNANV’s educational and research initiatives.
Superheroes and Sabers: An "Un-Gala" Celebration
Breaking away from traditional formal galas, the evening adopted a vibrant "Superheroes" theme under the banner "Honoring the Power of Professional Nurses." Attendees arrived in full costume, transforming the ballroom into a colorful assembly of caped crusaders and comic book icons.
The entertainment lineup featured a unique blend of local talent and solemn tradition: The Society of Lightsaber Duelists at UNLV provided a high-energy guest performance that thrilled the costumed crowd. The PNANV Board of Directors delivered stellar choreographed performances. The Nurse Honor Guards of Southern Nevada performed a deeply moving tribute to fallen nurse heroes, grounding the festive atmosphere in a moment of profound respect.
Growing the Mission
Beyond the scholarship program, the night highlighted PNANV’s broader impact, covering mentorship, self-care, educational programs, and charity work. As the association embarks on new projects and community-wide collaborations, it continues to grow its role as a premier professional body for Nevada’s nursing workforce.
